Porridge Recipes for Cold Mornings

May 17, 2017 by Gail Asbell

As the weather starts to cool down, we’re looking for warming bowls first thing in the morning. And when oats are filled with protein and fiber, it’s a perfect choice. Porridge is one of those things that we’ve all been eating since before we can remember. But these days, there are so many different recipes, and it’s really easy to personalise. Here are some of our favourite porridge recipes from some of our favourite recipe creators, when you need inspiration.

Peanut Butter and Banana Porridge from Jessica Sepel

If you’re looking for a warming bowl that tastes super indulgent but is filled with nutrients, this is your friend. Made with oats, peanut butter, banana, cinnamon, maple syrup, and nutmeg, it’s a warm hug in a bowl. It will also keep you full all morning as it’s packed with good carbs, proteins, and fats.

Paleo Porridge with Apple and Cinnamon from The Healthy Chef

If you’re not that into grains, don’t worry. This staple can be made with a whole range of things. This recipe takes LSA (linseed, sunflower seeds, and almonds) and uses it as the base, rather than oats. Apple is used to thicken it out and still cooked over the stove it’s warming and filled with protein and good fats.

Coconut quinoa porridge with banana and black sesame from The Holistic Ingredient

For those of us who can’t eat oats (either gluten free or otherwise) a nice alternative is quinoa. If you’re eating grains of course. Quinoa has the added benefit of being ever higher in protein than oats. This recipe uses banana and black sesame seeds to give it added flavour and nutrition.
